The Municipal Theatre

Next to the Grain Hall is the city’s municipal theatre, a neo-Baroque opera house that first opened its doors in 1903. It was designed by architect René von Wurstemberger and financed by a private company after an open call for proposals and an architectural competition failed to deliver results. The building was renovated and modernised in 2015, and since 2021, it’s been known as Bühnen Bern, which means “the stages of Berne”. Today, it hosts a rich program of opera, comedy, and ballet, including world premieres and major cultural events. Each season, the theatre puts on around 400 performances, making it a central part of Berne’s artistic life.
