The Samson fountain

A stop on the Berne audio-guided tour, the Samson and the lion fountain was built in 1544 by Hans Gieng. It depicts the biblical story of Samson overcoming a lion, from the Book of Judges.

A figure of strength

The account tells that Samson was born to an Israelite couple to whom an angel announced the coming of a son of incredible strength, destined to deliver his people, on condition that his hair never be cut, where his strength resided. The brightly coloured statue illustrates one of the most famous episodes of the Old Testament.

The Samson fountain is one of the many Renaissance fountains that make Berne famous, listed as Swiss cultural properties of national importance. Observe the vigour of the sculpted scene and the bright colours that adorn the statue, in the heart of the old town.
