The History of Bangkok
The Grand Palace of Bangkok
An emblematic stop on the Bangkok audio-guided tour, the Grand Palace appears behind tall, dazzling white walls, from which golden spires already rise. It is one of the most famous places in the capital.
Founded in 1782 by Rama I
Founded in 1782 by King Rama I, at his coronation and the birth of Bangkok as the capital, the palace was at first only a set of temporary wooden structures and bamboo fences. Very soon, these were replaced by walls of brick and stucco, the enclosure reinforced by nearly two kilometres of walls and monumental gates.
What to see
The site holds about a hundred buildings: pavilions, throne halls, courtyards and temples, including the famous Wat Phra Kaew and its Emerald Buddha. The political and spiritual heart of the country for more than two centuries, the Grand Palace is still used for major royal ceremonies, while part is open to the public. Observe its golden spires and sumptuous architecture.
