Wat Pho
A serene stop on the Bangkok audio-guided tour, Wat Pho offers eight hectares of calm in the heart of the city. It is one of the oldest Buddhist temples in Thailand, founded in the eighteenth century.
The temple of the Reclining Buddha
The present sanctuary was enlarged by King Rama I, then restored under Rama III. The vast complex holds more than a thousand images of Buddha. The most famous is the immense Reclining Buddha: fifteen metres high, forty-three metres long, covered in gold leaf, its feet inlaid with mother-of-pearl bearing one hundred and eight auspicious symbolic motifs.
What to see
Behind the statue, a row of bowls receives the offerings of the faithful, who contribute to the temple's upkeep. Wat Pho is also the cradle of Thai massage: its first official school, founded in 1955, is still active. Walk through this sacred place with respect and contemplation.
Practical information
