Our Lady of the Rosary Church

Today, Little Italy is best known for its restaurants, outdoor cafés, and lively atmosphere, but Our Lady of the Rosary Church recalls a time when life here revolved around close-knit families, fishing, and mutual support within the community. Its story began in the early 1920s, as the neighbourhood’s rapidly growing Italian population felt the need for a Catholic parish of its own. The project took shape in 1921 under Father Sylvester Rabagliati, and construction began in August 1923. A few months later, the church was ready just in time for Christmas Eve. What makes its story particularly moving is the way the building was funded. San Diego’s Italian fishermen are said to have donated a portion of their earnings, calculated according to the tonnage of fish they caught, to help pay for the cost of construction. Their contribution shows just how much the community wanted this church, and how important a social and cultural role it would come to play. Like Little Italy itself, the parish later endured a difficult period when freeway construction cut through and disfigured part of the neighbourhood, prompting many Italian families to move away. Yet the church remained an important landmark. To preserve its connection with parishioners who had dispersed across other parts of the city, it was granted the special status of an “Italian National Parish.” This meant that Italian families could remain members even if they no longer lived in Little Italy itself. Crossing its threshold feels almost like being transported straight to Italy.
