Welcome to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, a city shaped by over two thousand years of history, a city of quiet lakes, busy alleyways, and wide tree-lined avenues. It all began along the banks of the Red River, a vital waterway that made farming possible and drew the first villages here thousands of years ago. Thanks to its regular floods, the region quickly became one of the major hubs of population and trade in northern Vietnam. In 1010, everything changed when Emperor Lý Thái Tổ chose this place for his capital and named it Thang Long, “the Rising Dragon,” after a legend of a dragon rising into the sky above the river. From then on, Hanoi became the political, administrative, and cultural heart of the country for centuries, even as its name and status shifted with each imperial dynasty. The city grew around the Imperial Citadel, now a UNESCO World Heritage site, and developed a scholarly culture shaped by Confucian ideals, with civil service exams, learned officials, and places dedicated to knowledge such as the Temple of Literature, founded in the eleventh century. From the fifteenth century onward, Hanoi also became a major center of crafts and trade, with guilds that gave rise to the famous Old Quarter and its 36 streets, each traditionally linked to a specific profession like silk, paper, or copper. In the nineteenth century, the city entered a new chapter with French colonization, and in 1902 it became the capital of French Indochina. Administrative buildings, villas, opera houses, and wide boulevards reshaped the urban landscape, creating a lasting contrast between Asian and European styles. The twentieth century was marked by the struggle for independence and then the Vietnam War, during which Hanoi played a key political role and suffered heavy bombing, especially in the 60s and 70s. In 1976, after the country was reunified, it officially became the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Today, Hanoi is a blend of imperial heritage, colonial traces, and modern Vietnamese life, offering visitors a living history where past and present meet at almost every corner.
