Covered Market

You're now strolling past Dole's Covered Market. This building was constructed in 1883 to replace the town's former Parliament, which had stood here since 1422. It was built of brick, cast iron, glass and iron, and now houses the stalls of a market serving the finest specialties of the Jura department. Let's get a quick taste, shall we? You'll definitely want to try the famous Morteau and Montbéliard sausages. The Montbéliard sausage dates back to the 1st century BC and is made from slow-smoked pork. So does the Morteau sausage, dating back to the 16th century. The region is also famous for its cheeses. There's Mont d'Or, Comté, Morbier, Bleu de Gex, Cancoillotte... Enjoy them as a palate cleanser between courses, or as a main course in a "boîte chaude," or melted in a fondue or in potatoes au gratin. The possibilities are endless! You'll also find smoked ham from the Haut-Doubs region, poularde de Bresse and croûte forestière. Wine lovers, rejoice! The Jura won't disappoint: white, red, rosé, Crémant, vin jaune and straw wine.. There's truly something for everyone! If you'd like to find out more about Jura wines, I’d recommend a visit to the Museum of Vine and Wine in Arbois, just a 40-minute drive from Dole. And finally, on to the desserts! You can choose between the mouth-watering galette comtoise, a choux pastry treat with orange blossom, the galette au quemeau, another orange blossom delight, and the téméraire, a shortbread biscuit topped with flambéed apples, pears or grapes. With all these culinary treasures, you're in for a real treat!
