Hennebont Market

If you happen to be standing on Place Maréchal-Foch on a Thursday morning, you’ve picked a very good time to be here. You’re right in the middle of the largest market in Morbihan—and quite possibly one of the oldest in all of Brittany. Hennebont has been a trading town since the Middle Ages.

Around the year 1000, the first bridge was built across the Blavet, turning the town into a natural crossroads for merchants. At first, the market stayed tucked inside the fortified town, divided into smaller sections for different kinds of goods. But as Hennebont expanded, the stalls spilled beyond the walls, across the square, and into the surrounding streets.Before long, you could buy just about anything here—candles, leather, fabric, even wooden clogs.

But shopping came with rules. In the early 20th century, the people of Hennebont had first pick of the market. Anyone arriving from the neighboring villages had to wait their turn until the ringing of a bell—and later, the raising of a flag—gave everyone else the green light to start shopping.

Even buying food worked a little differently. Goods were measured using old units known as the minot, the pot, and the chopine. That system lasted until 1906, when merchants were finally required to sell by actual weight.

But if Hennebont had one true culinary claim to fame, it was butter. One local archive proudly declared that the town produced nothing less than “the best butter in all of Brittany.” And centuries later, the market is still going strong. Even after the square’s recent redesign, the smell of sausage-filled buckwheat crepes, fresh seafood, and local specialties still drifts through this colorful gathering place every Thursday morning.
