The Sandtorpark, in Hamburg
The Sandtorpark is a modern green space of the HafenCity of Hamburg, laid out on the site of a former historic port basin. The Hamburg audio-guided tour stops here to evoke this place, a witness of the transformation of the town, between port history and contemporary urbanism.
From the first port basin to the modern park
Here, everything has well changed. Originally, there was at this place a former gate of the town, which linked the medieval centre of Hamburg to the island of Grasbrook, on the Elbe. Then, in 1866, the first modern port basin of the town, the Sandtorhafen, was built nearby, marking the beginning of the rise of the great port of Hamburg, which would become one of the most important of Europe. This basin saw passing for decades the ships and the goods from all over the world. With the transformation of these former port lands into the HafenCity, the district has been entirely rethought, and the Sandtorpark is one of the green and public spaces laid out for the inhabitants. The place thus illustrates wonderfully the metamorphosis of Hamburg, which has known how to reinvent its port wastelands into a modern and pleasant district to live in, while keeping the memory of its past. A witness of the port history and the new town, the Sandtorpark is an interesting stop of the discovery of Hamburg.
