If someone asked you to name Germans’ favourite alcoholic drink, what would you say? Well, it could only be beer — a source of both national pride and everyday pleasure. Across the country’s 1,300 breweries, no fewer than 5,000 different types of beer are produced, and more than half of them are in Bavaria — Germany’s largest state, and the one Bamberg calls home. So it’s no surprise that Bamberg plays a big role in brewing… and quite a significant one, too. In fact, Bamberg is a true beer lover’s paradise. Back in 1818, the city had 65 breweries for just 17,000 residents. Today, that number has grown to 72, including those both inside and just outside the city walls. The one we’re stopping at — and the most famous of them all — is Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 as the “House of the Blue Lion,” it’s been run by the Trum family for six generations. Here, they still make one of Bamberg’s signature brews: Aecht Schlenkerla smoked beer. As tradition demands, it’s poured straight from oak barrels, with a first taste that surprises many visitors — a flavour reminiscent of smoky bacon. Legend says this happened by accident, when malt was scorched in a fire, creating an unexpectedly delicious beer. The more likely, historical explanation is that for centuries, wood fires were simply the only way to dry malt after germination. Either way, what matters is this: Schlenkerla’s smoked beer is one of only two in the world still made using the traditional method. Dark, richly flavoured, and with just 5% alcohol, this malty brew has a way of loosening tongues and bringing locals and visitors together. Just remember — like all good things, it’s best enjoyed in moderation.
