Dublin Castle, seat of power in Ireland
The Dublin audio-guided tour leads you to Dublin Castle, a jewel of the city centre that sums up on its own a major part of the city's history. Built in 1204 on an old Viking fort, at the request of King John of England, it was for centuries the seat of English power in Ireland.
Symbol of British domination
It was here that the viceroy of Ireland resided, representative of the British crown. The castle was built as a symbol of British domination over the island. Wars, power struggles and fires deeply transformed the building: its present architecture blends the original medieval structure with extensive reworkings of later centuries. In 1922, the castle was handed over to the authorities of independent Ireland.
What there is to see
You visit the State Apartments, richly decorated, the Royal Chapel and the medieval tower, the last remnant of the original castle. The courtyards and gardens complete the visit. Now used for official ceremonies of the Irish state, the castle is one of the most important historic sites in Dublin.
Practical information
Dublin Castle is on Dame Street, in the heart of the city centre. It can be visited according to its own schedule; admission is charged and opening times may vary with official ceremonies. The courtyards are largely freely accessible.
