Church of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Cajetan

Just a few steps away from Bologna’s iconic Two Towers stands the elegant Church of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Cajetan. Construction began in 1516 on the site of an earlier church that had stood here since the 5th century. Its architect, Andrea Marchesi, sadly died before the work was completed. The work was taken over by the Theatine Order, who completed the church and officially inaugurated it in 1694. Step inside, and you’ll discover a grand interior with three naves, lined with beautifully sculpted marble columns that add to its grandeur, along with richly painted walls and ceilings. The church bears two names, since Saint Bartholomew was the patron of the original, much older church, while Saint Cajetan was added later in honour of the Theatines’ founder. I highly recommend stepping inside to admire its interior for yourself.
