History

This monumental staircase, surmounted by a triumphal arch, is one of the finest and most important monuments of Cagliari. The bastion owes its name to the baron of San Remy, twice Piedmontese viceroy of the Kingdom of Sardinia. Here meet three very different centuries: its construction began at the end of the nineteenth century, on the old walls of the city of the beginning of the fourteenth, reusing the bastions raised by the Spanish at the end of the sixteenth century. The covered gallery and the terrace were imagined by Giuseppe Costa and Fulgenzio Setti, who created a fine neoclassical ensemble with Corinthian columns of white and yellow limestone. Before the terrace, the double staircase opens onto a covered promenade inaugurated in 1902: first a banquet hall, it served as an infirmary during the First World War, then as a refuge for the victims of the Second, that strongly damaged the bastion, faithfully rebuilt afterwards. Today restored, the place has become a cultural space hosting exhibitions and events.
