Santa Maria Novella Basilica

While the Santa Croce is dedicated to the Franciscans, the Santa Maria Novella Basilica is linked to the Dominican order, and was constructed from 1246. Blending Florentine Gothic style with Cistercian influences, the church features a bell tower rising 69 meters high. But it’s the coloured façade that will leave you in awe... Made of white and green marble, it matches many other Florentine churches. The façade dates back to the Renaissance and features the coats of arms of the families buried here. Inside, you’ll find more symbolic Florentine artwork from the 13th to the 16th century. You’ll also see a big crucifix, the work of Giotto – the same architect who designed Florence cathedral’s belltower! Santa Maria Novella is the oldest basilica in Florence, and a must-see landmark!
