The Accademia bridge
A stop on the Venice audio-guided tour, the Accademia bridge spans the Grand Canal, like three other bridges. It offers one of the finest views of the city and owes its existence to the Austrians.
From a metal bridge to a wooden bridge
During their military rule, between 1848 and 1866, the Austrians gave the city a second metal bridge linking the Dorsoduro and San Marco districts. Disadvantageous for boat traffic, it was temporarily replaced by a wooden bridge in 1933. Built in barely thirty-seven days, this provisional structure was finally adopted by the Venetians.
What to see
The arch combines wood with other materials to ensure its strength. From its top, the bridge offers a view unique in the world over the Grand Canal and the basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Take time to stop there to admire this emblematic panorama of Venice.
