What would Mexico be without its iconic national drink, Tequila? Probably a little less spirited! The story begins in pre-Columbian times, when the Mesoamericans used agave plants to create fermented drinks below 8%. When the Spanish conquistadors took control of the region, they introduced distillation techniques brought to Europe by the Arabs centuries earlier. This gave birth to a new kind of spirit: Tequila. A drink that quickly gained popularity across Mexico and the whole world and, by the 19th century, had become a symbol of national pride. Today, Tequila is deeply woven into Mexican identity, so it’s no surprise to find a museum entirely dedicated to its history in one of Mexico City’s busiest squares.
