Have you noticed the wooden houses along Molovegen Street? Running between the city and the sea, this street is a valuable reminder of Ålesund’s past, because these traditional houses are among the few buildings that survived the devastating fire of 1904 that destroyed most of the city. Their colorful façades and sloping roofs give you a sense of what Ålesund looked like before it was rebuilt in the Art Nouveau style. Today, many of these houses have been transformed into artisan workshops, galleries, small restaurants, and even the Fisheries Museum, creating an authentic and picturesque atmosphere that almost feels like a seaside holiday. At the end of the pier stands the Molja lighthouse, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. This small red lighthouse was built in 1858 and has been guiding ships safely into the harbor for more than 165 years, surviving both the great fire of 1904 and countless Atlantic storms. It is still in operation today, marking the entrance to the Brosundet channel with a light that briefly turns off every six seconds. This system, combined with green, white, and dark sectors, helps sailors determine whether they are navigating in safe waters. The lighthouse was also one of the first in Norway to be automated, back in 1889, allowing it to operate reliably without a lighthouse keeper. The pier itself offers a wonderful view over the harbor, the city, and the distant peaks of the Sunnmøre Alps. In 2007, the lighthouse was transformed into one of the most unusual hotel rooms in Norway, known as “Room 47.” Guests can spend the night inside the lighthouse itself, enjoying a surprisingly comfortable stay in this tiny historic building and waking up to the sound of the waves just outside the walls. If you have a moment, walk all the way to the end of the pier to enjoy the fresh sea air and take in Ålesund from a slightly different perspective.
