Here we are in Carmes Square, one of the most charming and picture-perfect spots in the city. All around you are beautiful buildings from the 18th century, and just to your left, the pink Consuls’ Palace, which is even older, dating back to the 17th century. What makes this square so special are its colorful houses and the stunning paving, a hallmark of Madeira, made from black and white pebbles laid out in intricate geometric patterns. On your right, the arcades shelter little shops, and in the warmer months, the restaurants here spread their terraces across the square, creating a lively, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for enjoying a drink or sampling some local specialties. The square takes its name from a Carmelite convent that once stood on this very spot, and even today, it’s a place where events and gatherings often bring the space to life.
