The Fonte Nova park, in Aveiro

The Fonte Nova park is one of the main green spaces of Aveiro, an oasis of lawns and games at the edge of a canal. The Aveiro audio-guided tour stops here to evoke this peaceful garden where the moliceiros pass, and its large yellow and white sculptural ensemble, work of Albano Martins commissioned by the Confraternity of Ovos Moles, in tribute to the famous confectionery of the city.

History

Peaceful canals, an iodised atmosphere and fine lawns to settle on: Aveiro has everything to make its visit a moment of serenity. Named after its district, the Fonte Nova park is one of the main green spaces of the city. With its grassy expanses, its playgrounds, its sports fields and its unobstructed view of the canal where the moliceiros come and go, it is appreciated by inhabitants and tourists alike. By skirting the quay to the lake, you glimpse five atypical elements of yellow and white colour: a sculptural ensemble twelve metres long and nearly four metres high, realised by the artist Albano Martins at the request of the Confraternity of Ovos Moles of Aveiro. This confraternity has as its mission to promote and perpetuate the ovos moles, the famous confectioneries based on egg yolks and sugar syrup, wrapped in a fine paste of rice or chocolate, in the shape of shells, boats, conches, fish or barrels, that recall the maritime identity of the city. The Fonte Nova park thus mingles relaxation, greenery and tribute to the local gourmet tradition.
