A river of archaeological treasures

The course of the Ljubljanica is more mysterious than it seems. Its bed has yielded hundreds of objects, from prehistory to the Roman era: weapons, tools, jewellery and amphorae. Given their abundance, archaeologists think that it was not only a route of exchange, but also a sacred river to which offerings were made. Many of these treasures are now exhibited at the National Museum of Slovenia.

If the Ljubljanica has so much charm today, it is also thanks to the development of its banks by the architect Jože Plečnik. Tree-lined quays, stairs, terraces and elegant bridges make up a harmonious setting where it is pleasant to stroll. You can walk along the river or discover it on the water during a cruise, to admire the old town from another point of view.

The Ljubljanica crosses the historic centre of Ljubljana. Its laid-out banks can be walked freely on foot at all hours and on the level. The cruises on the river follow their own hours and conditions, depending on the operators and the season.
