The Ljubljanica River

It’s hard to picture Ljubljana without its river. The Ljubljanica runs through the historic center like a spine, but its story is far more mysterious than it first appears. Over the years its riverbed has yielded hundreds of objects, from prehistoric times to the Roman era—weapons, tools, jewelry, and even ancient vases. Because of their sheer number, archaeologists believe the Ljubljanica wasn’t just a trade route but also a sacred river where offerings were made. Many of these treasures are now on display at the National Museum of Slovenia. The river’s charm today owes much to architect Jože Plečnik, who, in the 20th century, redesigned its banks, created its bridges, and even built a monumental lock. A stroll along the Ljubljanica remains one of the most beautiful ways to discover the city.
