San Juan de la Cruz Museum

Here stands the Museum of San Juan de la Cruz, a unique space built exactly where the great Carmelite poet and mystic died. Spanish mysticism, a spiritual and literary movement that flourished mainly in the sixteenth century, sought to express the inner experience of union with the divine through richly poetic language, and San Juan de la Cruz was one of its greatest voices, alongside Saint Teresa of Jesus. Founded in 1978, the museum brings together relics, personal belongings and artworks connected to the saint, carefully assembled by the Carmelite community. Restored in 2000, it now unfolds across twelve thematic rooms tracing his life, his writings, his spiritual influence and the ways artists from the sixteenth to the twenty-first century have portrayed him. You will see old and contemporary paintings, iconography, manuscripts and an exceptional collection of art inspired by his poetry. At the heart of the museum is the former sacristy, where several relics of the saint are kept. As you move through these rooms, you will discover a place where history, poetry and spirituality come together to offer an intimate encounter with one of the great voices of Spanish mysticism.
