Let’s take a quick break to mention a few other points of interest that couldn’t be included in the itinerary. Stockholm isn’t a single block of a city—its treasures are scattered across several islands. One of the most unmissable is Djurgården. Once a royal hunting ground, today it’s packed with museums and attractions for every taste. You’ll find the ABBA Museum to relive the golden age of Swedish pop, the Nordiska Museet showcasing everyday Swedish life through the centuries, and Skansen, the world’s first open-air museum, complete with Nordic animals and costumed interpreters. Add to that the Vasa Museum, with its awe-inspiring 17th-century warship, a Viking museum, and the Gröna Lund amusement park—you won’t run out of things to do on Djurgården. But Stockholm is also a delight for food lovers. Head to Östermalm Market Hall, a stunning brick-covered hall filled with refined stalls, perfect for sampling Swedish specialties. If you’d like to venture a bit beyond the center, visit Drottningholm, the royal family’s private residence and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its gardens recall Versailles, and its 18th-century theater still stages performances with original sets. Another gem is Gripsholm Castle in Mariefred, a red-brick fortress on the shores of Lake Mälar, home to the national portrait gallery. For a more intimate atmosphere, head to Sigtuna, Sweden’s oldest town. Its cobbled lanes, colorful wooden houses, and medieval church ruins tell a thousand years of history. And then there’s the Stockholm Archipelago: 30,000 islands and islets scattered across the Baltic. Some are less than an hour away by boat, like Vaxholm with its fortress, or Grinda for a nature escape of forests and coves. If it’s nature you’re after, Tyresta National Park, just 45 minutes away, immerses you in a primeval forest of century-old pines and peaceful lakes. And if you’re visiting in winter, enjoy the magic of the season: outdoor ice skating, cross-country skiing, dog sledding, or even downhill skiing at Hammarbybacken, Stockholm’s small ski slope. To warm up after so much adventure, nothing beats a sauna at Sturebadet, a historic spa right in the city center. Stockholm and its surroundings offer a unique mix of culture, nature, and relaxation. Well, with all this, you've got plenty of things to do, if you feel like staying in the area for a while.
