Prince-Bishops' Palace

Before you rises one of the most impressive monuments in Liège: the Palace of the Prince-Bishops. Standing proudly on Saint-Lambert Square, it carries more than a thousand years of history, marked by grandeur, upheaval, and countless transformations. Some even say it’s one of the largest Gothic civil buildings in the world. The story begins around the year 1000, when Bishop Notger built the first palace. Over the centuries it was scarred by fires and wars, and each time rebuilt. What you see today owes much to Érard de La Marck, the powerful prince-bishop of the early 16th century, who called on architect Arnold van Mulken. Together, they created a masterpiece where flamboyant Gothic meets the elegance of the Italian Renaissance. The palace’s design is striking, arranged around three successive courtyards. The first, open to visitors, is framed by four vaulted galleries. Look closely at the sixty carved columns: each one is different, decorated with faces, grotesque masks, or playful patterns. It’s like a storybook in stone, full of humor, imagination, and skill. Beyond it are two more private courtyards, usually closed to the public, as they now serve the judicial authorities. This was never just a residence—it was the very heart of power in the Principality of Liège, where the prince himself once dispensed justice. Even today, the palace remains a seat of authority, housing both the Court of Justice and the offices of the Province of Liège. Its architecture also tells the tale of its long past: the south facade, facing the square, had to be rebuilt in 1734 after a fire, this time in the Louis XIV-Regency style, while the 19th century added a neo-Gothic wing. As you stand in the courtyard, you’re in the middle of a monument that gathers a thousand years of power, art, and history. A place where Gothic, Renaissance, Classicism, and Romanticism all meet—just like Liège itself: fiery, varied, and forever alive.
